I am a journalist through and through. I am insanely fortunate to have the principles of the freedom of speech behind me as I interject my free will upon the public. I recognize that many nations across the globe are devoid of such privilege and it would be unwise to take it for granted.
With that being said, a rather unfortunate situation has taken place in Ethiopia. Currently, nine Ethiopian journalists are being detained by the government after being arrested this past weekend. The group of six bloggers and three freelance journalists have been charged with inciting public violence through social media. They all face a potential decade long sentence.
More importantly, the arrests came just days before Secretary of State John Kerry was set to visit Ethopia to “promote democracy and human rights.” The timing of the arrests had spurred international unrest as people are clamoring for the journalists’s safe…
